Somebody at BlackRock made two very different calls this week. The firm's bitcoin ETF saw about $60 million in net redemptions, while over the same stretch its funds bought more than $20 million worth of ether. Same manager, opposite direction, same week.
Zoom out and the picture gets messier. Back on July 25, ether ETFs had just snapped a five-day inflow streak, flipping to a single-day outflow of $70.7 million — a moment that looked like fading institutional enthusiasm. Two days later, the July 27 daily brief noted that, on a weekly basis, both bitcoin and ether ETFs were still logging their third straight week of net inflows. The data keeps swinging between "cooling off" and "still coming in," without settling anywhere.
This tug-of-war isn't new for ether. Over the past month, the asset has been caught between good news — BitMine buying $139 million in a single day, Morgan Stanley filing for an ETF — and bad news from inside the Ethereum Foundation, including a senior departure and warnings that development funding could run tight within nine months. Neither side has clearly won. BlackRock trimming BTC while adding ETH this week fits that broader tug-of-war, but it's worth being careful here: this is one product's weekly rebalancing, not proof that institutional money is rotating wholesale.
Context matters too. The latest daily bitcoin ETF read (July 28) showed a $50 million net outflow, the fourth straight day of outflows, and the Fear & Greed Index sits at 29. With the Fed's rate decision due in hours, whether this is just portfolio housekeeping or the start of something bigger will take more trading days to confirm.
