Coldcard硬件钱包出事:7000万美元没了,"自己的私钥自己保管"这套还灵吗$70M Vanishes From a Coldcard Wallet — Is Self-Custody Losing Its Believers?

2026-08-01
Coldcard硬件钱包爆出7000万美元损失,同日交易所净流入1.1万枚BTC,自托管信仰正在动摇?$70M lost via a Coldcard hardware wallet, same day 11,000 BTC flowed into exchanges — is self-custody losing faith?

Picture a self-custody diehard, the kind who swears by hardware wallets like Coldcard — offline, no exchange in the loop, supposedly hacker-proof. Then an August 1 report drops: an incident tied to Coldcard resulted in $70 million in losses. The device itself wasn't directly breached — the failure came from elsewhere — but the money's gone either way.

The timing makes it sting more. July alone saw 30 hacking incidents across crypto, with losses topping $200 million cumulative, according to industry reporting. The Fear & Greed Index is sitting at 27 right now, a near-week low, squarely in "fear" territory. And on the same day the Coldcard story spread, exchanges saw a net inflow of 11,000 BTC — with custodial platform River alone taking in 3,679 of those coins, the largest single recipient.

Put those together and a pattern emerges: some holders who once trusted "not your keys, not your coins" logic are moving funds back onto custodial platforms. It's less panic-selling, more a quiet "let someone else watch this" shift. Self-custody's whole pitch is security and sovereignty — but when the security part breaks down, sovereignty alone doesn't sell as well.

For now this might just be one bad incident rattling sentiment. But if it's not a one-off, the self-custody narrative is about to get tested again.
