Trump announced he's canceling a planned military strike on Iran and reached an agreement on the "perimeters of a deal." That's typically the kind of headline that makes investors more willing to buy riskier assets like Bitcoin. But Bitcoin barely moved. On July 31, Bitcoin spot ETFs (funds traded on regular stock exchanges that let institutions buy Bitcoin exposure) saw a net outflow of $265 million for that single day. The Fear & Greed Index, a gauge of market mood from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed), has been stuck at 25-28 all week — still in "fear" territory despite the good news.
That's the disconnect: good news landed, but the money didn't follow. We had already downgraded our BTC stance from "cautiously bullish" to "neutral" on July 28 — not because of Iran, but because the ETF inflows that had been supporting our optimism had reversed into outflows, combined with a price drop that day large enough to rank in the 87th percentile of Bitcoin's own 30-day volatility range, alongside a separate event happening the same day (details are limited, so we're not reading too much into it).
Worth noting: ETF flows briefly turned positive on July 30, with a one-day net inflow of $32.1 million, but this month's overall ETF inflows are trending toward some of the lowest levels seen in recent months. Money isn't rushing out en masse, but it isn't clearly coming back either.
What would change this neutral call? Several consecutive days of ETF net inflows, or the Fear & Greed Index clearly breaking out of the 25-28 range, would suggest direction is becoming clearer. If outflows deepen instead, neutral could slide toward cautiously bearish.
