ETH Funding Flips Positive — Who's Actually Buying?

2026-08-08
ETH funding just flipped positive as new longs pile in, while coins keep draining off exchanges — derivatives are speaking first.

Friday (Aug 7), ETH spot ETFs pulled in $49.6 million net — the fourth straight day of inflows. Same day, something shifted under the hood: funding rates (the fee longs pay shorts to hold leveraged positions) flipped from negative to positive, and open interest climbed alongside it. That combo matters — it means fresh capital is opening new long positions, not shorts getting squeezed out. Those are opposite stories: one is offense, the other is retreat.

Then there's the exchange flow split. ETH balances on exchanges have kept draining for seven straight days — coins typically moving to cold storage or staking, a sign of holders settling in rather than prepping to sell. BTC is doing the opposite, with coins flowing into exchanges, a setup that reads more like potential selling pressure. Two assets, two very different postures, visible on-chain without much guesswork.

None of this is really new. ETH price action has been stuck in a tight range for weeks — looked directionless, but the exchange outflow signal was already there, and ETH's price ratio against BTC had quietly climbed to a 30-day range high. This funding flip and fresh long positioning read less like a new catalyst and more like a confirmation stamp on a thesis that's been building for a month.

The catch: price gains are still modest, and the confirmation signal isn't strong yet. The Fear & Greed Index sits at 30 — still "fear" territory — even as sentiment just hit its least-fearful point in a week. Positioning is shifting quietly under the surface; price hasn't caught up yet. What comes next is whether these new longs hold, or this turns out to be another funding-rate blip that fades.
