Weak Jobs Data Should've Boosted Bitcoin. It Didn't. Here's Why.

Jobs data cooled rate fears, sentiment bounced — but Bitcoin's still stuck near $65K despite steady ETF inflows

Here's the headline: sentiment bounced back fast, but Bitcoin's price didn't follow — and that gap matters more than the data itself.

Last Thursday (Aug 7), U.S. July payrolls data showed a surprise drop of 23,000 jobs. That's normally bullish news — it cools rate-hike fears and should push money into risk assets like crypto. The Fear & Greed Index did recover, climbing from 25 on Aug 6 (the gloomiest day that week) to 31 by Aug 9. A Mandarin-language crypto channel saw a related video's view velocity spike to 268 views/hour, 2.6 standard deviations above its normal average — clear proof the Chinese-speaking crypto community was locked onto this jobs-vs-Bitcoin debate.

Yet Bitcoin's price stayed stuck near $65,000, unable to break through. Meanwhile spot ETFs (funds traded on regular stock exchanges that track crypto prices) for Bitcoin and Ethereum had pulled in cumulative 14-day net inflows of $736 million and $308 million respectively as of Aug 7 — money kept flowing in, but price barely moved.

OpenClue's Bitcoin thesis had spent the prior 30 days wrestling with whether ETF inflows alone were enough to justify a "cautiously bullish" call, with confidence swinging between 53% and 63%. When the jobs data dropped, we did not upgrade our stance — a single macro tailwind wasn't enough on its own. What actually moved our call to cautiously bullish came today (Aug 10), from a separate signal: hedge funds flipping from short to long on CME Bitcoin futures.

One thing to remember: sentiment can snap back overnight, but breaking a real price level usually takes harder proof — like capital flows actually changing direction.
