The Consensus Says "In-Line CPI = Good News." Bitcoin Fell Below $64K Anyway

2026-08-12
CPI matched forecasts exactly, yet bitcoin slid below $64K and fear hit 27 — the "priced-in" story doesn't hold up

The popular read: July CPI came in at 3.4% year-over-year, exactly as expected — no surprise, no shock, textbook good news for risk assets since it eases pressure on the Fed. Except bitcoin didn't rally. It slid to around $64,000, and the Fear & Greed Index kept dropping, from 31 on August 9 to 27 today — squarely in "fear" territory.

If "priced-in good news" were really driving things, capital should be flowing back in. It isn't. Bitcoin spot ETFs took in just $8 million net on August 11 — a rounding-error inflow, nowhere close to a real shift. This isn't "the bounce hasn't turned into a trend yet." There barely was a bounce.

In our BTC thesis tracking, the past 30 days have centered on one open question: is ETF inflow strong enough to sustain a cautious-bullish stance? Confidence has bounced between 53% and 63% with no clear direction. On July 28, ETF flows briefly turned negative alongside a price drop — flagged as one contributing factor, not a single confirmed trigger. Today's failure to rally post-CPI lines up with that same read on weak inflow persistence — not proof, just continuity.

There's a third angle worth considering: maybe this was never about CPI at all. On-chain data shows bitcoin has seen net inflows to exchanges for seven straight days — typically a sign people are positioning to sell, not hold. Combine a flat macro print with bearish on-chain flow, and "good news" simply has nothing to push against. What would actually break the standoff isn't another in-line inflation print — it's ETF inflows turning positive for several days running, or exchange flows reversing. Tomorrow's PPI data might be the next thing worth watching.
