Two rival theories are dividing Chinese-language crypto commentary right now. A video titled "Crypto's Biggest Short Squeeze Ever" hit 1,755 views/hour — 2.5 standard deviations above its channel's baseline — while a competing one asking "Did Institutions Know All Along?" hit 2,551 views/hour, a 2.0-sigma spike. One camp says the BTC rally was a forced short-covering event; the other insists smart money got in early.
Here's what actually happened. OpenClue's August 20 daily brief noted BTC broke a six-week range above $71,000 alongside roughly $300 million in forced short liquidations, with the brief's own wording being that short-covering "may have contributed more than new capital" — a cautious read, not a claim that fresh money was driving it.
But the story didn't stop there. Starting August 21, BTC spot ETFs flipped into a streak now at five straight days of net inflows, with the latest single day bringing in $308 million, and the Fear & Greed Index has climbed to 73 (Greed). If the August 20 spike was mostly short-covering, the days since look different — inflows sustained this long resemble real buying, not positions getting squeezed out.
The irony: the Chinese community is still debating what happened on August 20, while the market has already moved several days past it. Squeeze and institutional buying aren't mutually exclusive — a squeeze can kick off a rally that real capital later joins. What would tip the scale toward "institutions took over"? Watch whether ETF inflows keep holding through more U.S. trading days without funding rates spiking in lockstep with price. Too early to call it either way.
