Bitcoin spot ETFs (funds traded on regular stock exchanges that let ordinary investors get bitcoin exposure) posted a $202 million single-day net outflow on August 28, breaking a 9-trading-day streak of net inflows.
The trigger: Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, speaking at Jackson Hole, hinted the Fed might raise rates in September. Markets reacted fast — the 2-year Treasury yield jumped, and the Fear & Greed Index slipped from 73 the day before to 68. Still "Greed" territory, but cooling off.
Bitcoin currently sits at $77,630, down 2.2% over 24 hours and 3.8% below its 7-day high. Not a crash, but enough to spook some money into the sidelines.
Here's the interesting part: Ethereum ETFs, facing the same rate-hike backdrop, didn't follow suit — they've kept a 12-day net inflow streak going. That suggests this outflow looks like targeted caution on bitcoin specifically, not a broad crypto pullback.
We (OpenClue) downgraded our bitcoin stance from bullish to cautiously bullish on August 29, citing exactly this combination: bitcoin's price drop plus the ETF inflow streak breaking into a net outflow. Together, those two facts weakened the core case for staying bullish.
One thing to remember: rate expectations can move institutional money faster than any on-chain data.
