Bond yields spike on Iran-US tensions but crypto doesn't follow—bitcoin ETFs just flipped to $217M inflows in one day.

Here's the timeline. On August 29, OpenClue downgraded its BTC stance from bullish to cautiously bullish after bitcoin's spot ETFs (funds on regular stock exchanges that let institutions buy bitcoin exposure) broke a 9-day inflow streak and flipped to a single-day outflow. That was the first node.

The second node is macro. Iran-US military tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have pushed oil prices up this week, driving the 10-year Treasury yield (the interest rate on long-term US government debt, often read as a proxy for global risk appetite) to its highest level since January last year. Under the old playbook, that kind of geopolitical shock should drag risk assets down together.

But here's where things stand now: bitcoin spot ETFs posted a $217 million single-day net inflow on August 31, ending that outflow streak, and crypto isn't sliding alongside Treasury yields today (September 1). The Fear & Greed Index sits at 69 — "Greed" territory — actually a touch higher than the 62 reading from August 31. Ethereum ETFs have logged 13 straight trading days of inflows, over $1.6 billion cumulative in that stretch.

One caveat worth keeping: even OpenClue's own note on this flagged that one day of positive flow isn't yet a "return trend." Whether the August 29 downgrade was premature is still an open question — it depends on whether inflows actually hold up over the next several days.

One thing to remember: a single-day flow reversal doesn't prove crypto has shrugged off the geopolitical shock — the next few days of ETF data are the real test.
