Everyone Calls It Panic Selling. ETH's Derivatives Data Says Otherwise

2026-09-10
Everyone says panic selling, but ETH's open interest is rising, not falling — looks like deliberate shorting, not retail capitulation

The consensus story is neat: PPI came in hot, the 10-year yield broke 4.9% (highest since 2023), Iran tensions pushed oil past $100, and crypto panic-sold — BTC broke below $79K, ETH, SOL, DOGE all dropped alongside it. Clean narrative. One detail doesn't fit.

If this were genuine panic selling, open interest (total outstanding derivative contracts) should be shrinking as positions get closed. Instead, today's brief flagged that ETH's funding rate flipped negative while open interest actually rose. That combination points somewhere else: professional money isn't rushing for the exits — it's opening new short positions on purpose.

Those are not the same event. Panicked liquidations are reactive and usually burn out within hours. Deliberate short-building is a directional bet that tends to stick around longer. US markets are open today, and CPI data lands in about 23 hours. If shorts are positioning ahead of that print, this leg down may not be finished.

There's a third reading too: markets love to weld "rate panic" and "smart money positioning" into one storyline, but they may not point to the same ending here — macro conditions are genuinely tightening, yet the derivatives data looks calculated rather than chaotic. What would tip the balance? Watch whether funding rates and open interest both reverse together once CPI drops.
