While BTC Bled on CPI Fears, ETH Quietly Climbed Back to Its Weekly High

2026-09-11
BTC limps back on short-covering while ETH quietly reclaims its weekly high — the majors are splitting.

Two very different charts on the same Friday morning. Bitcoin, still digesting Thursday's hotter-than-expected core CPI print and rising rate-hike bets, briefly broke below $77,000 before clawing back to $77,626 — up just 0.2% over 24 hours and still 3.4% below its 7-day high. That bounce leaned heavily on short-covering, and BTC ETFs just logged their third straight day of net outflows, $283 million on the latest day alone.

Ethereum told a different story. It's trading at $2,497.89, up 3.5% in 24 hours and 1.9% over the week, still hovering right near its 7-day high — the strongest showing among the majors we track today. SOL, by comparison, rose 2.4% but remains 5.4% off its own weekly peak.

The divergence has some backstory. A daily brief from September 9 noted ETH's funding rate had briefly flipped negative — a sign professional money was actively betting against it — which sits oddly next to today's rally. Zooming out further, OpenClue's internal thesis tracker shows ETH's stance sat quietly at "cautiously bullish" with 55% confidence from late July through mid-August, until an August 20 single-day surge of 17.8%, paired with Trump's public push on crypto legislation and ETF-driven catalysts, locked that stance in. Confidence hasn't budged since — this rally reads more like a continuation of that long-held call than a fresh signal.

With U.S. markets closing for two days and ETF flow data going dark, whether ETH holds this ground without fresh data will say a lot about whether the rotation is real.
