Here's the call upfront: this bitcoin rally looks like real buying, not leverage-fueled hype.
Three data points back it up. First, BTC sits at $81,210, up 4.1% in 24 hours and 5% over the past week, still hovering near its 7-day high. Second, spot bitcoin ETFs (funds on regular stock exchanges that let everyday investors get bitcoin exposure without holding it directly) took in $433 million net on September 18 — the second straight day of inflows after flows turned positive on September 17 with $160 million, ending a prior two-day outflow streak. Third, OpenClue's system found that as BTC pushed toward $81,300 (a high point in its own recent trading range), open interest — basically the total size of leveraged bets outstanding — grew just 0.4%. That's barely any leverage buildup. Based on these three points, OpenClue upgraded its BTC stance from cautiously bullish to bullish.
But there's a caveat worth flagging. The Fear & Greed Index just hit 71, a one-week high and squarely in "greed" territory — sentiment running hot can burn out fast. Also, US markets are closed for the weekend and stay closed for one more day after that, meaning ETF flow data won't refresh until the next trading day. The $433 million figure will sit unchanged until then, so we can't yet confirm the buying continues.
This setup contrasts with August 29, when a 9-day ETF inflow streak broke into outflows and the market leaned much more on leverage to hold prices up. This time it's the opposite pattern.
One thing to remember: real ETF inflows carry more weight than leverage-driven pumps. If ETF flows flip negative or open interest suddenly spikes, this bullish call would need a rethink.
