ZEC's Back-to-Back Squeezes Drove an 11% Spike — But Is Anyone Actually Buying?

2026-09-23
ZEC's 11% spike was fueled by short liquidations, not buyers — two alerts say so

Two alerts, one pattern. On Sept 22 at 23:10, ZEC jumped 6.9% in an hour — with nearly all of the move packed into the final 5 minutes, triggering $2.05M in forced short liquidations as order books thinned and spreads widened. Less than seven hours later, at 05:15 on Sept 23, a second alert flagged another 11% surge in 24 hours, with over $2.1M in short liquidations concentrated in a 2-hour window 4-6 hours prior — accounting for 82% of that day's total liquidations. Both alerts were tagged short_squeeze, not fresh buying demand.

Around the same time, news of a European ZEC-linked ETP listing circulated as a contributing factor, ZEC climbed to #9 on CoinGecko's trending list, and Google searches for "zcash block time reduction vote" spiked 8,650%. Several signals lined up in the same window, giving this rally an outsized amount of attention.

But this isn't a new script for ZEC. We downgraded our stance from bullish to cautiously bullish on Sept 20, after a 5.5% pullback erased prior gains and open interest (a gauge of leveraged positioning) fell 4.7% — a sign the earlier rally's leverage base was shaky. The month-long question hasn't changed: is ZEC's momentum driven by real institutional/privacy-coin demand, or leveraged speculation riding the headlines? Two consecutive squeeze-tagged moves, rather than broad buying, don't resolve that debate — they just repeat it.

ZEC now trades at $1,622.16, up 6.2% in 24 hours and 32.6% over 7 days, sitting just 1.7% below its weekly high. History suggests squeeze-driven spikes like this often fade without real follow-through buying. The next thing to watch: whether actual ETP inflow data confirms genuine demand, or whether this cools off once the leverage is flushed out.
