Treasury Yields Hit a Decade-Plus High, Bitcoin Drops Below $83K

Treasury yields hit a decade-plus high, bitcoin falls below $83K — but ETF buyers haven't left

If your screen was all red Thursday morning, the culprit wasn't crypto news — it was the bond market. The 30-year Treasury yield hit its highest level since 2004, the 10-year touched a 19-year high, and New York Fed's Williams called another rate hike by year-end "reasonable". Risk assets got hammered across the board: Nasdaq and S&P fell in lockstep, and bitcoin slid below $83,000, down 2.1% in 24 hours and now 4.0% off its 7-day high.

The real tell isn't the price — it's the derivatives data. Bitcoin's open interest (total outstanding leveraged positions) dropped 6.5% in a single day, and funding rates crashed toward zero. That's the signature of a forced deleveraging event, not a genuine bearish shift on fundamentals. Leverage got flushed out; spot buyers may not have moved at all. The evidence: bitcoin spot ETFs just logged their fifth straight day of net inflows, pulling in $347 million on September 23 alone. Macro is selling; institutional flow isn't.

On September 24, OpenClue downgraded its BTC stance from bullish to cautiously bullish — timed right alongside the break below $83K and the broader deleveraging, an acknowledgment of what had just happened rather than a prediction ahead of it. The fear-greed index still reads 71 (greed), a gap with price action that history says rarely lasts — either sentiment catches down, or price stabilizes first. Which one wins is the next few days' story.
