Start with one number: on Sept 24, ZEC dropped 10% in a single day. But three days earlier, it had just staged two short squeezes — up 6.9% on Sept 22 and 11% on Sept 23, each accompanied by over $2 million in short liquidations. Same coin, one week, two very different rides.
How were these moves actually built? The Sept 22 pop saw nearly all of its 6.9% gain compressed into the last 5 minutes, triggering $2.05 million in forced short liquidations while order books thinned and spreads widened — a classic squeeze, not fresh buying. The Sept 23 move was sharper: over $2.1 million in short liquidations hit within a 2-hour window, accounting for 82% of that day's total liquidations, layered on top of news about a European ETP (exchange-traded product) listing. Then came Sept 24's reversal — a slow 10% bleed, with long liquidations front-loaded early in the decline and no coin-specific bad news; most majors were down that day too.
This isn't ZEC's first rodeo. We'd already downgraded our stance from bullish to cautiously bullish back on Sept 20, citing open interest (total outstanding derivatives contracts) falling 4.7%, leveraged longs continuing to trim positions, price sitting near its 30-day range high, and sentiment leaning greedy. The signal then was simple: fast gains, shaky footing.
This week's squeeze-squeeze-slide sequence hasn't overturned that read — it lines up with it. The rallies were squeeze-driven, not steady buying, and the drop happened without a specific catalyst, pointing to leverage-built gains that were always fragile.
Right now ZEC sits at $1,611.62, up 8.0% on the day, up 10.3% over 7 days, and just 2.4% off its 7-day high. The real question hasn't changed: is this rally genuine privacy-coin demand, or leverage cycling in and out on headlines? Worth watching whether the next squeeze brings clearer liquidation concentration and funding-rate signals.
