Last Time Treasury Yields Spiked, Crypto Deleveraged Hard. Next Week's Jobs Data Could Test That Again

2026-09-27
Last yield spike triggered a crypto deleveraging. Jobs data is next, and the ETF cushion is thinner now.

Start with the origin point: on September 24, the 30-year Treasury yield hit a new high dating back to 2004, the 10-year a 19-year high. OpenClue's daily brief that day was explicit — the crypto selloff was macro-driven by the yield spike, not a crypto-specific problem. Price fell first, headlines caught up after, and BTC briefly dropped below $83,000.

First node, same day: ZEC fell 10% on 09-24 in a slow bleed, with long liquidations front-loaded early in the drop and no ZEC-specific bad news. DOGE saw two liquidation-driven drops (-5.2%, -10.3%) on 09-23 and 09-24, both tagged as broad market moves, not isolated events.

Second node is this week's leverage unwind in reverse: on 09-25 and 09-26, TAO and ZEC each posted short-squeeze rallies — TAO up 5% in an hour with open interest rising, ZEC up 5.5% with about $290K in short liquidations. That's leverage flushing both directions, not necessarily fresh conviction buying.

Current state: the fear-greed index sits at 70, still "greed" but the lowest reading in a week — sentiment is turning cautious. BTC spot ETFs have posted seven straight days of net inflows, but daily inflow size keeps shrinking, meaning the cash cushion is thinner than before.

The next node is already flagged: upcoming jobs and PCE data could push 10-year and 30-year yields higher again. Whether crypto deleverages faster than it did on September 24 may hinge on how much of that shrinking ETF buffer is left.
