ETH Shorts Unwind, But Prediction Markets Tank Nearly 10% as Mood Cools

ETH longs deleverage while prediction markets drop nearly 10% — BTC dominance nears weekly high

Today (Oct 3), the daily market summary showed yesterday's rally — boosted by a weak jobs report — didn't hold. Total crypto market cap fell 2% over 24 hours. ETH sits at $2,680.57, down 2.7% in 24 hours but only 0.3% over 7 days, and just 2.7% off its weekly high — not a crash.

The key detail: ETH's derivatives (leveraged futures and options contracts) showed longs voluntarily unwinding, or deleveraging — traders who bet on higher prices choosing to close out, not getting forcibly liquidated. That's a meaningfully different signal from panic selling.

Sector performance diverged sharply. Prediction market and options-related tokens dropped nearly 10%, the worst-hit group in this pullback. Meanwhile some AI and identity-verification tokens actually gained 4-5%. This isn't broad panic — it's capital rotating between sectors.

Another signal: Bitcoin's market share (its slice of total crypto market cap) is nearing a one-week high, suggesting money isn't leaving crypto altogether but moving from riskier altcoin and derivatives positions into the relatively "safer" BTC.

We downgraded our ETH stance from bullish to cautiously bullish on Sept 30, and it's stayed in that cautious range since, with confidence hovering between 58-62% — the core concern being a lack of clear catalysts. This deleveraging episode lines up with that cautious read.

One takeaway: deleveraging isn't a crash, and sector divergence matters more here than the headline 2% drop.
