Three Days, Two Flip-Flops: Why BTC's Call Keeps Bouncing Between Bullish and Cautious

2026-10-04
BTC's call flipped bullish then back to cautious in 3 days — the third such reversal in 30 days, even as price stays steady

On October 2, OpenClue upgraded its BTC stance from cautiously bullish to bullish, backed by solid signals: price breaking to new highs, ETF net inflows, and falling exchange balances — real buying pressure, not hype.

Just one day later, on October 3, the call flipped back to cautiously bullish. The trigger was a 2.4% drop the following day, paired with falling open interest (total outstanding leveraged positions). That pairing matters: if leverage had been building up before the drop, open interest should have risen first. Instead it fell alongside price, suggesting this wasn't a leverage unwind — the buying simply didn't hold.

This is the third time in 30 days BTC's stance has spiked to bullish only to get pulled back. The first was September 19, driven by an extreme rally to $81,300 with open interest barely moving. October 2 marked the second real upgrade. Three attempts, three retreats — same pattern each time: the buying is real, but the rally can't hold for more than a day or two.

Zooming out exposes a disconnect: BTC spot ETFs saw $103 million in single-day net inflows on October 1 — the flow side looks fine. Yet as of today (October 4, US markets closed for the weekend, so ETF data hasn't updated), BTC sits at $85,132, up just 0.3% in 24 hours, up 0.4% over 7 days, and only 1.9% off its 7-day high. Price itself is stable. What's actually volatile is the judgment call, not the chart. The Fear & Greed Index at 65 marks its lowest reading in a week.

Worth watching next: if BTC spikes again, does open interest rise with it this time? If so, leverage may be building. If it stays flat like the last two times, the same "strong buying, can't hold" contradiction could repeat for a fourth round.
