ZEC Takes Two Liquidation Waterfalls in a Week — Every Bull Case Gets Erased

2026-10-05
ZEC got hit by two long-liquidation waterfalls this week — every bullish catalyst got erased within days

On October 2 at 6:45pm, ZEC fell 5.1% in one hour. Of the $686,000 in long liquidations, $583,000 hit in the final five minutes — a classic liquidation waterfall: price drops, leveraged longs get force-closed, the closing sells push price down further, repeat. This wasn't the first time this week. Three days earlier, on September 29, ZEC bled 10.4% over 24 hours, accelerating hard in the final four hours, with $590,000 in longs wiped out in just the last hour and almost zero shorts involved. Neither drop was news-driven — both were leverage eating itself.

What's more telling is OpenClue's 30-day thesis tracking on ZEC. Two genuine bullish catalysts hit during that window — a short squeeze that cost bears $34 million, and a $500 million ETF-related headline — and each time pushed the stance toward bullish. Each time, the call got reversed within a day or two because open interest (total leveraged positioning) couldn't sustain it. That pattern of catalysts firing and fizzling lines up with this week's two liquidation events, echoing a standing internal question: is ZEC's movement driven by real demand, or just leveraged money rotating in and out.

ZEC now sits at $1,327.72, roughly flat on the day, but down 16.6% over seven days and still 16.1% off its 7-day high — the one asset in the tracked basket in a clear, deep drawdown. Good news can lift the price for a day or two; it hasn't yet been able to outlast the leverage unwinding underneath it.
