BTC Funding Rate Flips Positive While ETH Goes Negative — Leverage Sentiment Splits

BTC funding turns positive, ETH negative — leverage sentiment splits while ETF inflows stay thin at $21M

Sunday's (Oct 11) market brief flags a split worth noting: Bitcoin's perpetual funding rate (the fee longs or shorts pay each other to hold positions) flipped positive, signaling leveraged bulls are creeping back. Ethereum's funding rate went negative in the same window — the two biggest coins' leverage sentiment is moving in opposite directions.

Prices today: BTC sits at $83,015, up 0.3% on the day, down 2.5% over 7 days, 4.2% below its 7-day high. ETH trades at $2,503.21, also up 0.3% daily but down 7.1% over the week, 8.3% off its high. Similar short-term price action, opposite funding signals — a reminder that price moves alone don't reveal leverage positioning.

This fits a pattern we flagged before. On Oct 9, OpenClue upgraded BTC from cautiously bearish to neutral after noticing open interest (total outstanding leveraged positions) fell 4.9% even as price rose — a sign of shorts getting squeezed out rather than fresh longs piling in. Today's positive funding rate adds a confirming data point to that call. ETH, meanwhile, has held a cautiously bearish stance since Oct 7, and its negative funding rate today is consistent with that view.

Don't get ahead of the data, though. BTC spot ETFs saw just $21 million in net inflows on the most recent trading day (Oct 9) — a modest number — and with US markets closed for the weekend, that reading won't update until the next session. The Fear & Greed Index sits at 61, in "greed" territory but not extreme.

Watch for confirmation: if daily ETF inflows climb into nine figures and BTC funding stays positive for a week straight, the recovery story strengthens. If inflows stay thin and funding flips negative again, this looks more like a short-lived short squeeze.
