Korea's Chip Stock Rout Hit Crypto Twice This Week — BTC Snapped Back, ETH Didn't

Korea's chip-stock rout triggered ~$1.8B in crypto liquidations twice this week — BTC decoupled fast, ETH didn't

On the surface, crypto got hit twice this week by the same thing: Korean tech stocks. On October 13 and again on October 15, a selloff in Korea's chip sector — Kospi dropping as much as 8%, SK Hynix leading losses — rippled into crypto, triggering roughly $800 million and then nearly $1 billion in forced liquidations. Easy to call this "panic," but the real story is the transmission mechanism: an external macro shock routed through cross-market leverage into crypto derivatives, not a crypto-native problem.

Layer one is straightforward: chip stocks fall → risk-off spreads broadly → leveraged crypto positions get liquidated → prices gap down. Layer two is where it gets interesting. After the October 13 shock, Bitcoin saw sustained outflows from exchanges — typically a hoarding signal pointing to accumulation rather than selling pressure — and price decoupled with a fast bounce. Combined with earlier observations that open interest didn't spike alongside price moves, that rebound looks more like leverage getting flushed out and spot buyers stepping back in, not fresh leveraged chasing. Ethereum told a different story: exchange inflows kept rising over the same window, a classic signal of potential sell pressure, and its decoupling bounce was visibly weaker.

Right now, BTC sits at $81,396, down 0.7% on the day and 1.6% over seven days — just 3.3% off its weekly high. ETH is down 1.6% on the day, 3% over seven days, and 5.8% off its high — a deeper pullback. Both shocks originated outside crypto, but the two assets are digesting them differently depending on their own positioning structure. Whether that gap widens next time an external shock hits is the thing worth watching.
